Confused
I am confused. I guess I don't completely understand ectopic pregnancies and IVF. I understand when trying to conceive naturally your risk of having an ectopic, after already having at least one, is higher and high with each one. Makes sense. OK so how in the hell do your chances increase with IVF once you have already had an ectopic. IVF with no history of ectopic's your chances are 2-3% chance of having one. IVF with history of ectopic 5%. I know we are talking LOW numbers here but how are your chances increased. Aren't the tubes out of the game at this point?? I guess I don't understand what the egg does before it implants. Does it travel all around, down the tubes and back before implanting. Does it travel down the tube and get stuck. I don't understand. Weird!! All I know is I have had my fill of ectopic pregnancies and I am not going to pay $15,000 for another. Oh the joys of being an infertile. Crap I tell ya!!!!!!! Crap!!

Perhaps I can clear a little confusion for you. The 2-3% number for ectopic is for women with normally functioning tubes, not women with severely damaged tubes. The number for you (or me before I had mine removed) would be more like 99.9% chance of ectopic so the 5% is a considerable decrease! You can't compare apples to oranges, or healthy tubes to unhealthy tubes.
What happens during IVF is that during transfer, if the catheter isn't well placed and the embryos injected slowly, sometimes they can float a bit and wind up in the tube. I can honestly tell you that I have NEVER met someone who had this happen. I bet the numbers are actually much lower than that but just haven't been updated.
Hope that helps...
Love you,
Michelle
Thanks Auntie. I need to keep my ass of the internet :) Google has a way of making me feel like my world is going to end at any minute. This is a stressful!!!!!!!!! But worth it. Right???????
Yep. My journey through IVF was one of the most stressful times in my life. It was right up there with having 4 babies in the NICU. And it is ALL WORTH IT!!!!! One day, this will be a distant memory as you are chasing your kid's through Wal-Mart and thinking about how easy it used to be to shop ;o)
Jen, take a deep breath and rely on your friends like four babies 4 us. They will help you get through this. You can always call me and yell, I'll listen.
Love you,
Mom
